Abstract: This study presents visual records documenting the earliest investigations of the Bulgarian capitals Pliska and Preslav, carried out by scholars of the Russian Archaeological Institute in Constantinople (RAIC, also rendered RAIK from the Russian acronym) and other researchers from the late 1880s to the late 1920s. It briefly outlines key results and conclusions of the archaeological work. Particular attention is paid to plans, technical drawings, sketches, and photographs that accompanied these investigations. The analysis draws on written evidence and visual materials preserved in central and regional archives as well as in the personal fonds of leading scholars. The assembled sources offer a clearer picture of the first discoveries in the medieval Bulgarian capitals.

Keywords: Middle Ages, photography, antiquities, ruins, archaeological excavations, Pliska, Preslav, RAIC / RAIK, Uspensky, Škorpil.
