Abstract: This article seeks to clarify the question of how the Bulgarian political newspaper Vazrazhdane, published in 1876 in the city of Brăila, was financed. Drawing on a range of sources – epistolary materials, publications in Bulgarian Revival periodicals, memoir evidence, and receipts for paid subscriptions – it argues that Vazrazhdane was sustained by its subscribers and editors. The article also presents evidence that the editorial board made several attempts to secure external funding, all of which proved unsuccessful. On this basis, it challenges the possibility of any link between the newspaper’s funding and its editorial content.

Keywords: Vazrazhdane (newspaper), financing, Todor Peev, Brăila.
