Abstract: This article examines the confrontation between Ekaterina Karavelova and Stefan Stambolov on personal, political, cultural, and gendered levels. It analyses the relationship between Petko Karavelov and Stefan Stambolov, Karavelova’s role in the rupture between the two politicians, and Karavelov’s resignation from the regency. The study also considers the judicial prosecution of opponents of the regime, focusing in particular on the case brought against Karavelova and two other women. Finally, it traces the shift in Ekaterina Karavelova’s attitude toward Prince Ferdinand following Stambolov’s death.
